Sweet Genovese Basil is a classic Italian culinary herb prized for its large, aromatic leaves and rich, sweet flavor. It is one of the best basil varieties for homemade pesto, pasta sauces, pizza, salads, soups, marinades, and fresh garnishes.

North Florida Growing Note:

Sweet Genovese Basil grows very well during the warm season in the Florida Panhandle. Plant it outdoors after the danger of frost has passed and nighttime temperatures remain consistently warm. Basil is sensitive to cold temperatures and will be damaged or killed by frost.

North Florida’s summer heat can cause basil to flower quickly. Harvest the growing tips regularly and remove flower buds as they appear to encourage continued leaf production. During the hottest part of summer, light afternoon shade may help reduce stress, although the plant still needs plenty of sunlight.

Harvest leaves in the morning after the dew has dried. Pinch or cut stems just above a pair of leaves to encourage branching and fuller growth. Avoid removing more than one-third of the plant at one time.
